WHAT IS IT?

what is VBC: pilates for singers?

Alan Herdman introduced Pilates to the U.K., establishing Britain’s first ever Pilates studio in 1970. He had studied at the London School of Contemporary Dance and was working as a teacher and dancer when, in the late 1960s, he was invited to New York to learn about the Joseph Pilates Method. There he worked intensively with Carola Trier and Bob Fitzgerald, two instructors who had been trained by Pilates himself.

His interest in working with singers began when he was invited to start working with the pupils of Manuela Ochakovski.  Since then he has worked with singers such Marie Angel, Hilary Summers and Felicity Palmer.

For this exclusive course, Alan has designed a tailor made Pilates course specifically for singers.  He invites you to learn with him, not as a ‘quick fix’ but to learn slowly, over 12 sessions, how to get to know your body as a singer and help learn how to navigate the physical demands placed upon the singer in their working lives.

During the course Alan will be focussing on strength and flexibility without tension.  This will include posture, upper torso strength, lower extremities and core strength.  Through the sessions Alan will give you a repertoire of exercises that you will then be able to use in your daily lives.

how WILL THE COURSE work?

Each week, Alan will work with a singer, and you will be able to work alongside him from the comfort of your home or wherever you may be!  You will be able to either tune in to the live session every Monday at 9.30am or catch up on that week’s session online which will be available to view for 7 days until the next session.  During the session you will be able to ask questions through the chat function which will be managed by our founder, Catherine Hopper.  There will be time for a 15 mins Q&A session at the end.

There will be a bonus ‘Open Surgery’ session after our 12 sessions have come to an end where you are able simply to join and trouble shoot.  Is there a stage move you need guidance with or a specific physical niggle that you would like advice on how to manage? Here you will be able to talk to Alan directly.

WHEN?  Every Monday at 9.30am for one hour from 17th January, 2022.  Please see our booking page for exact dates.

There he worked intensively with Carola Trier and Bob Fitzgerald, two instructors who had been trained by Pilates himself.

At that time Pilates was well-regarded amongst New York’s dance fraternity, but was unknown in the Britain.  Alan’s first clients to his London studio were actors, dancers and singers, but word soon spread as doctors and physiotherapists began recommending Pilates to patients struggling with chronic injuries. Alan now lectures on Pilates around the world, and he has written several successful books, including The Pilates Directory (2004), The Gaia Busy Person’s Guide to Pilates (2003), Pilates for Men (2007) and The Complete Pilates Tutor (2014).  He runs a training course for Pilates instructors in London and supervises courses in both Athens and Istanbul. As well as running his own studios, Alan and his assistants teach in dance schools and designated Pilates studios internationally, and he regularly presents at Balanced Body’s international Pilates On Tour.
